Overview

Nephrilin was identified through research on diabetic kidney disease, where it demonstrated the ability to reduce proteinuria (protein in urine, a marker of kidney damage) and slow the progression of fibrosis in renal tissue. Diabetic nephropathy is the leading cause of kidney failure worldwide, and current treatments only slow progression rather than reversing damage. Nephrilin represents an attempt to directly protect and repair kidney tissue at the peptide level. Published data comes primarily from animal models of diabetic kidney injury.

⚙️How it works

Nephrilin appears to reduce TGF-beta signalling in renal tissue, suppressing the fibrotic cascade that leads to kidney scarring. It also reduces oxidative stress markers and inflammatory cytokine expression in the kidney. The exact receptor target has not been fully characterised.
