Overview
Selank is a heptapeptide developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences - the same lab that created Semax. It is a synthetic analogue of the naturally occurring immunomodulatory peptide tuftsin, with an added Pro-Gly-Pro tripeptide for stability. Approved as a pharmaceutical in Russia since 2009, it is prescribed for generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) and as a nootropic. Unlike benzodiazepines, Selank produces anxiolytic effects without sedation, cognitive impairment, or dependency. It is commonly stacked with Semax for combined anti-anxiety and cognitive enhancement effects.
โ๏ธHow it works
Selank modulates GABA-A receptor sensitivity, enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission without directly binding the benzodiazepine site. It also increases BDNF expression (similar to Semax), modulates serotonin metabolism, and has demonstrated immunomodulatory effects through its tuftsin-derived structure. Unlike traditional anxiolytics, it does not impair memory or motor function - in fact, it enhances them. It also appears to stabilise enkephalin levels in the blood, which may contribute to its mood-stabilising effects.

Selank vs benzodiazepines
Selank's most compelling advantage over traditional anxiolytics is its clean side effect profile. Benzodiazepines (Valium, Xanax) work but cause sedation, impair memory, build tolerance, and carry dependency risk. Selank reduces anxiety while simultaneously improving cognitive function - the opposite of the benzo trade-off. Russian clinical studies showed comparable anxiolytic efficacy to phenazepam (a potent benzo) without any of the associated cognitive impairment. This makes it particularly attractive for people who need anxiety relief while maintaining cognitive performance.
